Our short history...

Alturnertive was created in June 2009 by Caron Ottewell to offer a showcase for some of Kent's best emerging artists and art students. Designed to run alongside the Turner Contemporary Open in Margate, it showed the work of 29 artists in 4 venues. After the successful first show Caron approached a number of talented and enthusiastic artists and asked them to become part of the next stage of setting Alturnertive an artist-led group. The group now plans to apply for some funding and is devising the first year's programme of events.

She has been a trustee at Crate Studio and Project Space in Margate since 2008. Caron recently completed the 2008/9  AA2A Scheme at UCA in Canterbury where she also delivered a talk to the third years on "Studio provision in Kent" and "Things you wish you had been told when you graduated!"  She is the Secretary for 2010's Pushing Print.

Lynsey Harrison

Lynsey graduated in 1999 from the University of Reading with a BA(Ed) Art & Design, and in 2008 from the U.C.C.A. Canterbury with a BA(Hons) Fine Art. On graduating from Canterbury, she was immediately involved with The Creative Foundation’s Folkestone Triennial, working as guide support for high profile art experts leading the contemporary art tours, and also as workshop facilitator for the local Roma Community. Throughout her work history she has had a diverse experience of working within creative and educational settings and is currently supporting students with disabilities at the University for the Creative Arts, alongside working as a Practitioner with the creative agency Future Creative. As a practicing sculptor, she was long-listed for the Jerwood Sculpture Prize 2009, and is also currently undertaking a period of research within the Artists Access to Art College scheme at the UCA. In 2007 Lynsey worked as a technician for Antony Gormley installing his first London solo show, Blind Light, at the Hayward Gallery. In 2006 she worked extensively on The Margate Exodus, a community based project and film, commissioned and produced by Artangel for Channel 4 Television, and this developed her keen interest in the importance of participation in the arts, through issue-specific and audience-specific art projects.

Emma Sandy

Emma graduated in 1998 with a BA(Ed) in Art, specialising in Ceramics. During her studies she developed an interest in large scale work. This interest was developed by further study in Kecskemét, Hungary to develop her practical skills. Emma has worked at the Hayward Gallery to install Antony Gormley’s Field For The British Isles, a mesmerising installation comprising of a sea of 40,000 miniature terracotta figures, handmade by a community in Merseyside. Since then Emma has become interested in community art based projects and whilst working as a Primary School Teacher has been involved in projects with Isle of Thanet Arts, Strange Cargo and Art Monkeys contributing to festivals and carnivals. She has also worked as a volunteer rigger, building the 200m Waste Man for Artangel and Channel 4’s film Exodus. Within her school Emma contributes to the development of art practices, currently runs the Inside/Outside Art club, and she has successfully gained funding to improve the environment within various schools. As a practising Ceramicist Emma has also sold work in Australia, California and the UK, and has been published in Ceramic Review and the Observer.
